The (not very) Epic/Apple war.

OK.

The new legal battle between game developer Epic and iPhone-maker Apple continues to heat up, as Epic says Apple will be cutting it off from the developer platform for Mac and iOS before the end of this month.

…So what?

PS: Don’t get me wrong: I understand why they’re fighting. But here’s the thing about the Computer Wars: they’re over, and Apple came out of them as an increasingly self-contained hermit kingdom. Apple will last for a long time, but what it can’t particularly do is recover from the inevitable setbacks.

So people can’t play Fortnite on their iWhatevers. All right, I admit it: it kind of bytes*. But what’s it to me? I got plenty of hardware and software support to fall back on.

*Sorry.

  1. And people can & will just play it on Androids. Kids don’t care who makes their phone as long as they can play what they want on it. This is such a dumb fight for Apple to get in. It’s like they didn’t learn a thing from the last time they got in a platform war with commodity hardware/software platform.

  2. Not sorry.

I love that Epic is mocking Apple with a parody of their own commercial, and I appreciate the pro-consumer pose.

That said, I don’t think they’ve got a leg to stand on, and simultaneously going after Google undercut what little case they had.
    .
Ultimately, I think their goal is to launch a rival app store, and this is just battlefield prep.
With the sure effect of being really got advertising.

      1. I said Tech Boomers. Not referring to Baby Boomers, but us old school people who like having a keyboard and a monitor, and all that good stuff. 🙂

    1. Heh. Glad I’m not a Boomer.

Mrs. Cat has a Mac because I got tired of having to puzzle out whatever Microsoft did in their latest “update” .. Apple is better at consistent UI feel.
      .
That said .. Mrs. Cat hasn’t touched her Mac in almost a year because her iPhone X does everything she needs to do.

Computers are increasingly the domain of the video-gamer and the IT professional .. everyone else has a handbrain or fondleslab.

      1. It’s kind of difficult to write any length of thing on a tablet or smart phone.

        I believe you’re exempt.

        1. An iPad with a removable keyboard is remarkably flexible .. but yeah, I’m keeping the MacBook. (at least until I have another corporate laptop to abuse)

        2. You’d think but I know a lot of people who MUSH exclusively on phones, and that’s a hobby that is nothing but writing.

          It’s a lifestyle thing.

Back in the 50s and 60s we predicted everyone would have a Terminal into the Worldwide Computer Network in their homes.

Turns out everyone has their own personal one, and it’s a phone.
