Ranks of Bronze is David Drake’s classic ‘Romans captured and forced to fight alien wars’ stories; and if that doesn’t sound weird, it’s only because he did such a good job with it. Don’t mind the cover, though. Baen has always had its little ways.

Is very good. Highly recommend.
The less you know going in, the better, as exploration and information gathering are focal points. I will give you the following tidbits: There is no combat. I heard someone comment that it was HEAVILY inspired by Ray Bradbury, and now I can’t unsee it (I couldn’t figure out how it was hitting my nostalgia button so hard until that moment).
