So, smoke started billowing from my car this afternoon.

Which is, by the way, an amazing way to get the McDonald’s drive-thru line to clear out ahead of you. Anyway, nothing exploded, and turning the heat all the way up cooled down the engine enough for me to get the car home. On the other hand, I was exposed enough to have my eyes start watering, and I took an immediate nap for a couple of hours, so I’ve decided to run at reduced capacity for the rest of the day. In a little bit I’ll go look at the car and figure out what happened.

On the gripping hand, I suspect that what happened is going to be expensive, possibly to the point where my car guy’s gonna remind me that he buys them. This may still be a great time to sell a car, but by definition it’d also be a bad time to sell one. Which reminds me: I sell books, and I have a Patreon

  1. Eh, that’s happened to me. If you don’t change the oil often enough the engine gets angry with you. Allegedly.

  2. What color, originating where? How long did it keep smoking? Were any sounds involved?

    1. Bubbling sounds, grey smoke coming from the hood. Car engine cooled down once I cranked the heat. Oil is actually fine, but engine coolant looks dry. We’ll refill it and get it over to my mechanic tomorrow.

      1. I sympathize. There is a story out of Florida about a person who purchased a used 2014 Ford electric vehicle for $11,000. After 6 months the battery failed. They were told that the replacement cost $14,000 but not to worry because there weren’t any available.

Whatever happens, somebody’s got it worse.

      2. If the oil is fine, and your electronics work, it shouldn’t be a worst case scenario.
