Tempting. Well, let me specific: the subtitled version is tempting. The dubbed version is setting my teeth on edge, and putting me into full Snooty Geek Mode.
I’ve always been a fan of Hayao Miyazaki’s work. Also, when I’ve watched this movie before I’ve always been struck on how it feels like an alternate timeline where World War I simply didn’t… happen. I’m giving serious thought to seeing this properly. Which, again, means subtitled. Because I’m a horrible snob that way, sorry.
I have been told that “dubs over subs” is a fairly common position in the anime-fan community. I prefer subtitles myself. I just finished Neon Genesis Evangelion and Cowboy BeBop, both subtitled.
I got the order reversed. The correct position is “subs over dubs.”
I always haves subs on, but having been nursed on Star Blazers, dubs don’t hurt me.
Having teethed on Battle of the Planets, and later encountered G-Force: Guardians of Space … dubs aren’t bad per se, but somehow lose something of the immersion in another culture.

Nothing to be sorry for. I’m nearsighted enough that I’ll prefer dubs when I end up sitting at the back but otherwise, as acat pointed out, a bit of nuance gets lost in most dubs. In about 20 years I’ve seen one dub I liked better than the sub (The sub translation was Just That Bad and they seemed to do a better job getting their act together with the dub) and one where I liked the dub about as well or maybe better (The Licenced By Royalty dub was Just That Good!). Other then that I’ll go with subs when there a choice.
