Keep watching the skies: Bab5 coming to Blue-Ray in December.

Hello: “Just in time for its 30th anniversary, the cult ’90s sci-fi series Babylon 5 is headed for Blu-ray. Babylon 5: The Complete Series, containing every episode of J. Michael Straczynski‘s space opera magnum opus, will be released this December. It will be the first time the series has been remastered in high definition, giving viewers their best look yet at the show’s ground-breaking special effects.” It has not yet shown up on Amazon; also, I don’t know if this includes the movies. Guess we’ll find out at Christmas!

  1. That’ll be interesting if they can cleanly upsample the CGI. I watched a couple of episodes last year, and the CGI looked pretty bad. Considering it was rendered for SD television, that’s not surprising, but it was still jarring compared to more recent stuff. I’ve been spoiled by the improvements in CGI this century.

  2. I’m guessing that the movies are either:
    1) Separate disc sale
    2) Part of extras

Kind of depends on whether the market demand can support a separate purchase?

So I’m leaning toward option 2.

  3. I watched the series ~2005-2007, which was about 10-12 years after it’s initial run, and the CGI looked terribly dated even then.
Still, I’m glad for the reissue, though I doubt I’ll get it. The DVDs I bought almost 20 years ago are enough for me. I don’t get much benefit from upsampling TV shows produced before HD was a thing.
