DUNE: PART 2, GODZILLA VS. KONG release dates pushed back.

Everybody’s talking about DUNE, sure…

…but maybe some of us want to see the new ‘giant lizard fights giant ape’ movie, too. Anyway, it’s all because of the strikes, which have been going on mostly without outside notice. My sympathies are essentially with the strikers, myself — and also against interest, since replacing pedestrian human writers with pedestrian digital ones will do nothing except make my own work look even better — but I’m not sure how they’re expecting to win.

I mean, it’s not enough to deserve to win. You need to have a plan. Expecting the public to rally to your cause isn’t a plan, either. Half the country hates Hollywood, a non-trivial chunk of the rest resents having to spend money actually paying for art, and it’s never been easier to find casual entertainment. I also have to wonder just how adversarial a relationship the union leadership reallyhas with the studios. That’s can be a problem, in labor-management negotiations… but never mind me. I’m sure it’s all fine.

  1. SAG gave the studios an extra two weeks as a good faith measure and got spit in their face for the trouble. Turns out the studios just wanted that time for movie and tv show promotions.

And the studios are openly “we’re going to break” the writers union.

  2. Striking when your product is non-essential and easily replaceable is a….bold move. Certainly not a wise one.

There are literally millions of hours of entertainment to stream. No one has seen even 10 percent of the total amount of filmed product, because no one has lived long enough to do so.

So the studios still make money (not as much as greed demands but enough to keep the lights on) from streaming, renting and selling their Catalogs & Library’s on the regular, the other side gets nothing except residuals… someday. Where’s the leverage for striking again?
