Cast for Guillermo del Toro’s FRANKENSTEIN announced.

It’s pretty solid: Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield, Christoph Waltz, and Mia Goth were mentioned as the principals. I have no idea if one of them is going to be the Monster, though. None of them seem quite right for that particular part, although I suspect Isaac will get to be Dr. Frankenstein. I like Waltz a lot as an actor, but he’s too old for that role, too.

  1. Y tho?
There are lots of stories you can tell in two hours.
Frankenstein isn’t really one of them.
Worse, it features one of the most unlikable protagonists in literature.
Then there’s the ‘90s version starting Kenneth Whathisface, that already does the story as much justice as a movie can. As adaptations go, it’s brilliant. (Which also means I’d highly recommend that you look elsewhere if you’re looking for fun. The story is haunting and powerful, but not enjoyable.)

On the bright side, it’s an actual tragedy, being made in modern Hollywood.
Too bad the zeks have never read the book, and only approved it because of brand recognition.
Hopefully, Del Toro got complete creative control in his contract.

(Some endless remakes I get. Every actor worth his sale wants to make a run at Hamlet. Every actress wants to make a run at Lady MacBeth. But Victor Frankenstein and his Monster aren’t in that category.)

    1. It is horror, as you say. I hope if anyone can pull that off, it’s Del Torro, though I wonder what Peter Jackson could do with it if he tried.

    2. I still want Del Toro’s version of At the Mountain of Madness. Just think of what that movie would be with a proper budget and cast.

      1. I’d really rather not.

Just because you like a story, doesn’t mean a faithful adaptation would make a good movie.
In this specific case, a large percentage of the story is looking at bias-reliefs and intuiting their meaning. Worse, this is the pivot around which the story turns. It can’t be minimized or removed without fundamentally altering the plot of the story.
(Likewise, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is one people keep bringing up. The story is mostly three people sitting in a room and talking (with Mike as a virtual presence). This is not good movie material. I love the story, but no. Just no.)
