OpenAI: We can’t make our thing without copyrighted stuff!

The only proper response: “F*ck you, pay me*.”

Anyway:

“ChatGPT developer OpenAI recently acknowledged the necessity of using copyrighted material in the development of AI tools like ChatGPT, The Telegraph reports, saying they would be “impossible” without it. The statement came as part of a submission to the UK’s House of Lords communications and digital select committee inquiry into large language models.”

Now, ChatGPT would prefer that the actual response to be: “Oh. Okay, I guess you can use copyrighted material then, if it’s that important for your own project.” I don’t begrudge them their attempt to try and get their data for free like that. I can see the attraction in trying to do that. It’s their best way to keep their AI scraper from being too expensive to develop. They have a lot riding on this.

…The only proper response remains: “F*ck you, pay me.”

  1. I have no disagreement with anything you said.

Except that the ChatGPT devs ought to be ashamed of themselves for making that argument in the first place.
