I mean. It’s a statue of Bacchus. I don’t actually know what the god’s old rites were, but I am somehow confident that doing a ‘bump and grind’ happened from time to time. Particularly if alcohol was involved.

But I certainly understand why the locals would want to discourage behavior. Maenads are seriously bad news.

If you’re going to embrace Bacchus, you’re stuck with the rest of it, as Luke alluded to. That means, ladies, that it’s all fun and games until Zeus takes a fancy to you. And even that might be fun, until Hera finds out. As I recall, there aren’t many “And they lived happily ever after” stories in the Hellenic mythos.
