Book of the Week: A CONVENTIONAL BOY.

I know, I know. But Charles Stross is just so entertaining when he’s being terrified over nothing! A CONVENTIONAL BOY will be his latest Laundry novel, and this one’s going to be over, God help us all, D&D. It’ll almost certainly be highly distressed over precisely the wrong things, but Stross is a legitimately good writer and I don’t really consider these books to be horror novels anymore. I know, they’re supposed to be, and if they are for other people? Well, you know. It’s no skin off my nose if others find them appealing for more conventional reasons.

  1. What percentage of Steven King stories could be easily resolved with the introduction of a firearm in the first act?

Look, I know exactly how strong and tough St Bernards are. I currently own 4 of the slobbering beasties.
I have a good idea about the effects of rabies.
I am confused about why a rabies vaccination used to be good for the dog’s entire life, but now they need a booster every year. (But they were available and generally legally required when the book was published.)
And I am absolutely certain that buckshot and tears would resolve the situation.

  2. A cloaking robe of elvenkind
    Hangs in my wardrobe behind
All those things that mother said
    Were proper for a boy…
