As I was reminded here. John M. Ford was one of the best writers I ever knew. I wrote the below after hearing of his passing; in case you’re wondering, ‘Cadre’ refers to a fan-In Nomine creation of mine. I felt that that particular game world rather badly needed a bunch of speculative fiction author-Saints ready to come back down to Earth in order to kick ass for the Lord. Perfect folks for JMF to hang out with, in other words.
He’s still missed.

“The stars do not see,” the Archangel mused,
He was – not pedantic. Precise; correct.
Smelled of chalk dust, his voice perhaps amused
But not expressive; always circumspect.
I avoided making a flippant reply;
I expected not his visit, you know
Indeed I expected – naught much, once my
Last breath at last went to where things might go.
But now I sit, implausibly still here;
Though free of traitor flesh – for some small time
While my childhood gods smile, and pour me beer,
And welcome my words, both prose and rhyme.
“The stars do not see… but we always do,
So now you will have time to create anew.”
I forget where I first read John M Ford’s stuff. It may have been the Klingons supplement for Fasa Trek. It may have been Final Reflection. It may have been one of the Car Wars stories he wrote for SJG. (Street Legal? Going Mobile?) But I did greatly enjoy his work. Still saddened by his passing.
