Context: there are a lot of conspiracy theories out there about Denver International Airport; more specifically, what’s underneath it. And, to be fair, it’s a rather odd airport. Here’s a sample of some of the art work:
It’s famous for its terrifying, 32-foot-tall statue of a giant horse with fiery, glowing eyes. Even creepier, the red-eyed statue, called Blue Mustang, killed its sculptor, Luis Jiménez. It fell on him and severed an artery.
Inside the airport, there are also murals of a devil jumping out of a suitcase, as well as a statue of Anubis, the ancient Egyptian god of death. Some of the most controversial murals have now been removed, but they featured a character that resembled a Nazi officer in a gas mask, children in front of a burning building, and kids gathered around a knife.
…If I had to guess, I’d say, in order: there’s nothing there; there’s nothing there but they’re encouraging the conspiracy theories because the airport went hideously over-budget; the federal government has a break-this-glass-in-case-of-nuclear-war emergency shelter/government facility under there*; fnord! At any rate: good troll job by the airport. You might as well lean into situations like that.

*Which doesn’t really count as a conspiracy, honestly. I want the federal government to have emergency backup facilities in case a disaster befalls the nation; and I recognize that the existence and precise location of said facilities are on a need-to-know basis, and I don’t need to know that. ‘Course, I was raised in an era that took operational security a good deal more seriously…
Cold-riveted girders with cores of pure selenium, magnesium-tungsten alloys, and gold-plated bolts don’t come cheap…
.
Ok. I’m firmly in the “kickbacks, corruption, and over-regulation are sufficient explanation” camp with a side helping of “post-modern art is deliberately tasteless”.
But the other explanations are so much more fun.
Part of the problem is that they excavated a ton of underground space for a sooper-dooper advanced (for 1990 or so), automated luggage-handling system that was a costly, unmitigated boondoggle.
At least, that’s what THEY say all that excavation was for…
What, no bees? 🙂
