Black Mirror, Altered Carbon, Disenchantment, Dragon Prince, Black Lightning, the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel*, Electric Dreams… anybody got an opinion? Or an alternative suggestion? Obviously, I like the SF genre; but if something is really, really good (and also funny) I’ll think about something more mainstream. Note: everything on here I can watch without subscribing to anything, so I’m not all that interested in spending more money or anything.

Watched a couple episodes of Black Mirror. Found it trite.
Not SF, not funny either, but Longmire is superb. And it has Katee Sackhoff, so there’s a sf hook anyway.

Altered Carbon is a must watch especially if your into Cyberpunk/Scifi. Note while there are funny moments(Grandma in Male Bikers body announcing from the bathroom that she can pee standing up on the Day of the Dead) it is not funny. It’s something you watch after the kids fall asleep. It got picked up for a second season but won’t be out till 2020. It’s one of those shows you might have to watch twice to get everything.
And the reason to watch Altered Carbon after the kids go to bed is the massive amount of violence and nudity. Both are present in very large quantities.
I haven’t seen Black Lightening myself, but the only comment I’ve seen about it indicated the series was disappointing. Unfortunately, I don’t remember why the commentor thought that way.
Blame! is a good too! It’s an animated movie. Based on a Japanese Manga. But it seems to be a one shot Haven’t seen anything in the genre.
Not sci-fi in the least, but Call the Midwife is fairly well done and has some understated British humor.
Have you watched Person of Interest? A friend suggested it. Slow burn on season 1 and then it gets better with every season. Also extremely relevant to digital privacy and government intervention.
Plus a character who’s a sociopath but presented in an interesting way. (Less insane, more “has limitations”)
Trollhunters Tales of Arcadia. Guillermo del Toro returns to faerie in this animated series.

The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt tends Left politically, but it’s consistently funny and unafraid to take shots at sacred cows it feels a fondness for.
I think political humor needs to target its creators’ beliefs to even have a chance at being funny. Otherwise it comes across as mean spirited and petty.
I should clarify that the show is apolitical. It just plays on exaggerated stereotypes and subverted expectations, and both of those are of NYC natives.

For instance, it’s hard to understand what the big deal about motor voter is, and how it opens the system up to fraud, if you live in an area where a car is a luxury item, and almost no one you know owns one.
