MSNBC joins the Birther conspiracy.

God, I hate this Birther conspiracy theory crap – and don’t bother, Sparky; I screen first-time comments – but watching the talking head designated as “Chris Matthews” call for Obama’s birth certificate to be released is the funniest thing that I’ve seen all day.

Personally, I figure that incoming Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie’s on a fool’s errand: God could come down from Heaven with Obama’s long-form birth certificate and it won’t make a difference to a segment of the population. I also figure that the President’s happy to keeping Birthers riled up about this and not, say, the man’s college transcripts*. But I don’t think that the talking head quite understands that it has taken a position that has been (incorrectly) identified with Birtherism: which is to say, calling for the stupid certificate to just be released in order to end the controversy, or at least restrict it to the True Believers. Watching the contortions among the Usual Suspects among the Left should be amusing…

*Which would have been a lot more relevant in 2008. And which will be in 2012. If I’m expected to believe that the President’s a smart guy, I’ll need to see some historical evidence. I mean, it’s not like he’s demonstrated much in the way in brainpower since he took office…

  1. Yeah, I’d really like to see Mr. “Most Brilliant Man in the Room” produce those sooper-seekrit university transcripts.

  2. I’ve been saying this for a couple years now, anytime Birtherism rears its ugly head: What possible incentive could Obama have for producing his birth certificate? (Other than, y’know, preserving the dignity of his office, which by all appearances falls somewhere below “Floss after every meal” on his list of priorities)

As long as he DOESN’T show the certificate, he’s got an immensely convenient, loud, and easily-mocked fringe to demonize (and with which he can associate anybody who opposes him)…which is pretty much all a lefty ever wants. If Birthers didn’t exist, he’d have to invent them.
