…I can’t make myself be upset that the folks at PAX (Penny Arcade’s mega-gamer convention*) made a good-looking woman go and put on more clothing. As the article notes, Penny Arcade has rules about ‘booth babes’ and ‘partial nudity’ at its flagship con; the cosplayer’s costume apparently broke the rules; and that’s pretty much it from my point of view**.
This apparently puts me in somewhat stark contrast to a lot of FARK Geek‘s comments section, but I kind of can live with that. If only because a large section of them seem to want to rant about America’s hang-ups about sex… which is interesting, because I happen to know a bunch of social conservatives, and from what I can tell that sub-demographic largely does not obsess over the subject nearly as much as the people who want to bitch and moan about neo-Puritanism.

*By the way, and this is directed at any random political operatives reading this: take notes, people. These guys know how to build a base and get them to do things.
**By the way: if the woman in question wanted to go out in public like that then that’s a different story. Lord knows that I’ve seen women wearing less on the beach. Or at cons where the rules are more lenient, for that matter. But private functions have the right to set ground rules.
“Whaaaat? Boobs AREN’T family-friendly?”
Doug: of course they are. They are what cause a lot of families to get their start.
Interesting fact in the article, which the ranters about “hung up Americans” missed: the policy was put to a vote, and the people most active in the Penny Arcade community supported it.
Well, I can see their point if the demographic they’re trying to attract is families and younger kids. However…cleavage and/or mini schoolgirl skirts..I think they’ve figured out the men 12 and over demographic for whatever other convention they plan to be at.
She’s hot, no doubt. But hot don’t give you no pass from the rules…despite what we all learned in college…and high school…and so many other places…
Just read their statement on it all. So last year they were oppressive for letting scantily clad women be exploited, this year they’re oppressive for barring the exploitation of scantily clad women.
<–wondering where to get my wife some of that clothing and how much it would cost me to get her into it..
BCochran> You would probably need to do all the dishes for at least a month and keep her in flowers and chocolate before bringing it up.
