PS: I only wish Charles Stross had borrowed off of me. Nah, I figure that he riffed off an idea of Terry Pratchett’s, which is pretty much what I did.
Heck, I remember pulp fiction from the 70s treating unicorn imagery as having a very dark side.
“Purity”, “strength”, “proof against poison”, and “having a thing for virgins” don’t exactly have innocent connotations when applied as a metaphor for the drug trade and associated illicit activities.
