Maybe the answer is that Vivek Murthy should stay off of Twitter.

(H/T: Hot Air Headlines) The rest of this Daily Beast article on Vivek Murthy and, of people, Rand Paul, is not particularly interesting: but I wonder if Eleanor Clift has thought this through?

A surgeon general’s views on gun violence have never been a litmus test before, but Murthy got the attention of the National Rifle Association with this 2012 tweet: “Tired of politicians playing politics w/ guns, putting lives at risk b/c they’re scared of NRA. Guns are a health care issue.”

A potential surgeon general candidate’s views on gun control have never been this easy to disseminate before, either.  Seriously, if you go on Twitter and write things, do not be surprised when people read those things, and react accordingly.

PS: It will be suggested that the end result will be that politicians and potential nominees will have to learn to be more circumspect in what they say in public.  To which I reply: Republicans and conservatives have already learned that lesson, thanks to an ever-vigilant partisan media. I find nothing untoward in making their Democratic and liberal counterparts live by the same standards. Or, hey! We could all relax about this stuff… No?  Well.  Suffer, then.

  1. Blaming guns or any other inanimate object for violence is stupid. A gun can be used for both good and evil, it is the person wielding the gun that makes that determination as to how it is used.

The 2nd Amendment is the keystone amendment, it provides the teeth to protect the other amendments (such as the 1st amendment). If we lose the 2nd amendment, our rights are basically whatever the government thinks we should have at a whim.

To the average progressive liberal type, that is a “feature.” Taking away the right to protect yourself is one of their most sacred beliefs.

  2. More people are killed every year with knives and blunt objects than are killed with long guns, aka the dreaded assault rifles, but you never see anyone trying to outlaw knives or baseball bats. Mostly because even leftist politicians realize they would be laughed out of any hope of ever achieving office if they tried. Yet they keep hoping to be able to outlaw inanimate objects which really won’t do anything to stop killings anyway as criminals are always break the law by definition.
