Three things to take away from this Amy Bishop article.

Gun in Ala. campus shooting bought 2 decades ago
By DESIREE HUNTER (AP) – 15 hours ago

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The gun used to kill three people during a faculty meeting at an Alabama school was bought for the suspect’s husband two decades ago when he said he was having problems with a neighbor, an investigator testified Thursday.

The investigator told a judge that an acquaintance bought the gun in New Hampshire for Amy Bishop’s husband to skirt a waiting period where the couple lived in Massachussetts.

In no particular order:

  1. There’s something going on with the husband.
  2. Bill Delahunt should not get off the hook for letting this one back out onto the streets, just because he’s cutting and running from Congress.
  3. If Amy Bishop had decided to cook off in MA instead of AL, the restrictive gun laws of the former wouldn’t have done a damned thing to make it harder for her to kill three people.

NYT covers for Bill Delahunt; Boston Herald… won’t.

First, the NYT (via AoSHQ).  While discussing the latest insanity* coming from Amy Bishop (a ‘herpes bomb,’ apparently), the Times manages to discuss Bishop’s shooting of her brother without:

  • Mentioning just what political circles the Bishops were active in;
  • Mentioning just who the prosecutor was that dropped the charges; and
  • Mentioning just where that prosecutor is now.

The answers are, of course: Democratic political circles; William Delahunt; and representing the MA-10 Congressional district.  It’s a shame that the Times decided that such information was superfluous to requirements, but it’s not like who-what-when-where-why is all that important, surely?

Meanwhile, the Boston Herald is gearing up for a full-court press on Delahunt: Continue reading NYT covers for Bill Delahunt; Boston Herald… won’t.

Rep. Bill Delahunt (D, MA): why did you put Amy Bishop back on the street?

Amy Bishop, of course, is the woman who murdered those people down at the University of Alabama… and, apparently, she was ‘taken into custody’ for the murder of her brother in 1986.  And that’s where it gets interesting.

Amy Bishop was released before she was booked, however, and she was never charged in the incident. All police records of the case have since gone missing, with the exception of an entry in the police log noting an accidental shooting, Frazier said.

Braintree officers who remember the 1986 shooting said that former police Chief John Polio dismissed detectives from the case and ordered the department to release Amy Bishop after a telephone conversation with former district attorney William Delahunt.

Polio was not forthcoming about why then-DA Delahunt decided not to press charges, or why the documents in the case are apparently not available. Given the circumstances, perhaps the Congressman from MA-10 would like to fill in the blanks, as it were? Assuming that he’s done deciding whether he’s going to go through the process, of course.

PS:Oh, this just gets murkier.

Braintree Police Chief Paul Frazier confirmed today at a news conference that Amy Bishop had fatally shot her brother in 1986. But Frazier offered a different account of the shooting, saying Bishop had shot her brother during an argument and was being booked by police when the police chief at the time ordered the booking process stopped and Bishop released to her mother.

“I don’t want to use the word ‘coverup’ … but this does not look good,” he said.

No. No, it does not.
