This is not really about Perry. This is about quality control at the Washington Post.

This is getting exasperating. Now we apparently have Michael Gerson of the Washington Post making stuff up:

It is now a familiar pattern — the scandal of sanity. Rick Perry is criticized for supporting discounted higher education for the children of undocumented workers, as though the ignorance of the innocent is an obviously superior policy option.

There is room for debate on all these issues.

But these are not the arguments we’ve seen. Instead, candidates are accused of political heresy. Then they apologize — some eagerly, others reluctantly. Movement conservatives have created a box of orthodoxy so small that even the most conservative candidates must engage in undignified contortions just to fit.

#rsrh QotD, It’s all because of the Jews Edition.

Well, not yet – but when you start blaming shadowy conspiracies for your problems (which is what the Left is doing right now), you’re going to eventually end up talking about the Jooooooooooooos. It’s the tertiary stage of conspiracy thinking, and once you reach that point, there’s more or less no hope for you.

Anyway. Here’s Michael Gerson, with his quote:

When an ideology stumbles, its adherents can always turn to alcohol – or to conspiracy theories. It is easier to recover from alcohol.

Mostly because very few people actually want alcoholics to stay on the sauce. But you can always find a group ready and willing to enable conspiracy thinking – particularly, again, if they can get you on the path of blaming it all on the Joooooooooooooos.

There have been several recent attempts to explain Obama’s worldview as the result of his post-colonial father or his early socialist mentors — Gnostic attempts to produce the hidden key that unlocks the man. The reality is simpler. In April 2008, Obama described small-town voters to wealthy donors in San Francisco: “It’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them.” Now, to wealthy donors in Massachusetts, opponents are “hard-wired not to always think clearly.” Interpreting Obama does not require psychoanalysis or the reading of mystic Chicago runes. He is an intellectual snob.

…and I am forced to admit that I once assumed that I was an intellectual snob, myself. Quite smug about it, too. Then I found out that the intellectual snob demographic is about the only one in American society that still considers European-style class distinctions even faintly relevant: which was a problem, as I was entirely too lower-class and lowbrow to qualify for membership.

Eh. Much more fun to stick it to the Man, anyway.
