I got turned onto The Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant because I had been reliably informed that the books were good. Not just ‘good for books written by public figures:’ objectively good. I am in the middle of reading the Memoirs now, and so far I am impressed with Grant’s style and voice. The annotations (this is the 2017 Harvard University Press edition) are likewise useful, and the Kindle edition actually seems to have been designed to not infuriate the reader with navigation from the text to the footnotes, and back again. Well worth checking out.
