Your move, Governor Moonbeam.
The measure, aimed at an increasingly popular tactic used by 2nd Amendment activists, would make California the first state since 1987 to outlaw the controversial practice of publicly displaying a weapon.
The governor — a gun owner — has not taken an official position on the bill, passed by the Legislature last week. He has argued both sides of gun control issues in the past.
…because he’s going to have to make a choice now. California law currently permits the open wearing of unloaded firearms; this bill would eliminate such practices, despite the fact that an unloaded gun is pretty much by definition not a threat to anybody. But it does serve notice that there is someone out there who is prepared to respond to a threat, if necessary… and if people are worried that carrying guns might lead to gun violence: oddly enough, violent crime has gone down as firearms carry generally has gone up. Which should surprise nobody, but apparently still does. That’d be mostly people for whom guns are some sort of scary evil magical item, mind you.
Anyway, the liberty-hating fascists over at the Brady Center (hi, guys!) have made it abundantly clear that this bill is part of their national anti-civil rights campaign, and they certainly want Governor Brown to sign this bill. Will he? Well, Brown’s a liberal Democrat… so probably yes, as soon as he thinks up a good-enough reason to endorse making it illegal to carry an unloaded gun openly. Whether the US Supreme Court lets him get away with it is, of course, a completely different question…

Paging Justice Thomas. Paging Justice Clarence Thomas…
Scary, evil, magic items, indeed, the ‘rods of noisome injuries’ range in size, power and noisiness from the tiny ‘pop-rod’ (1d4 piercing damage and an annoying ‘pop’ sound; med range; rof 2) to the massive two handed ‘BOOM-stick’ (6d6 piercing and 4d6 bludgeoning damage at PB range, lessening by 2d6 each at each additional range increment; rof 1, requires S save to maintain balance). Produced in variations limited only by the human imagination, all are activated by the infernal incantation “Imo bussa capa nyazz”. Use of one of these accursed items immediately changes the user’s alignment to Psychotic Evil, and he will begin, at first opportunity, to devour babies, strangle widows and orphans, and kick puppies.
The gun-banners might find themselves scoring an own-goal with this one, should the Supremes decide that openly carrying an unloaded weapon is bannable, but openly carrying a loaded one is Constitutionally protected.
.
After all, one is an “arm” and the other is just a paper weight.
What? The Golden State, actively trying to curtail the freedom of their residents? Impossible!
Cam: Shocking, ain’t it?
Thus the reason I am from California. Hopefully, the rest of my family can escape before it becomes even more enlightened.
Have they ever got a handle on the gang banger who actually use guns?
I don’t even play dice based RPGs and I thought qixlqatl’s comment was very well done.
Why thank you, Phil. I’m afraid it fell rather flat with my fellow rpg’ers (and apparently everyone else), though 😉
Oh, I laughed: you just flubbed your roll to detect it.
Oh, the vagaries of unguided polyhedrals in a bound 3 dimensional environment….
