‘Destiny’ trailer.

Destiny – Xbox 360 is… actually tempting.

And I do have an Xbox 360, so I could even play it.  I just wonder if the game is really going to be that cool.

  1. The Beta was pretty fricking sweet.

I’m one of the admins of an XBox 360 Destiny Clan. If you’re so inclined, I might be able to help you out a bit.

The first step would be to go over to http://www.bungie.net and register an account with your gamertag. There are a few (read: 25 and counting) codes out there for minor bonus material, but I’m pretty sure you’ll have to enter them into your account before launch to get them.

      1. No worries.
It’s an open-ended invitation, so feel free to take me up on it any time.
And the invitation applies regular commenters as well.

    1. OK, I’m going to try not to be a rabid fanboy, and give you an evenhanded look at the thing.

It’s a FPS made by Bungie. The controls are as tight, and the environments as interesting (both scenery porn and tactical options) as you’d expect.

The story has been kept largely under wraps. We know it’s science fiction informed by fantasy. There’s a lot of mythic history, and we’ve only gotten the barest overview. There’s a giant godlike being/machine called The Traveler. It came to humanity, and brought about our Golden Age. But the Traveler was pursued by enemies. They almost wiped us out, until the Traveler sacrificed itself to save us. It hangs in the sky, over the Last City. It’s remaining energies sent out to empower the Guardians (that’s us).

It’s a “shared world shooter”. This requires some explanation, and is not synonymous with MMO. The set-up is roughly corridors and commons. The corridors are private. You’ll encounter only enemies and your fireteam in them. The commons are large open areas that serve as a hub for corridors. These are semi-public. You’ll encounter other players (and bunches of enemies) running around here. There’s a hard cap on how many other players will be sharing the environment with you. It’s pretty low. I believe the number is 6, but don’t hold me to that.
These commons are also where “public events” happen. We only saw a couple of variations of these during the beta (very strong enemies that require teamwork and lots of firepower to defeat, and several small enemy teams that need to be defeated within a time limit) there will undoubtedly be more. You’re under no compulsion to join a public event, if don’t want to, just keep going, you’ll transition out of the shared area, and another player will transition in. It’s remarkably seamless.
Any loot you see is yours. The other players’ loot does not exist for you, and yours does not exist for them.

It’s level-based. Which I’m admittedly not all that fond of. It’s difficult or impossible to damage enemies of a higher level than you. There are a lot of complicated balancing factors to make it so that you can have fun accompanying a lower-level character without overshadowing them or stealing their fun. (Most missions have a “must be this tall to ride” requirement that keeps lower level characters away from their certain death.)
One issue with this, is that the equipment which (for instance) speeds your grenade recharge won’t be as effective at doing that when you go up a level, but you’ll be able to damage higher level enemies with it. It looks like we’ll be chasing effective gear for most of the first 20 levels. (After which there is a level cap. You can go past the level cap by finding equipment that gives you levels. It’s evidently at this level that things open up and the game really comes into its own with epic raids and things. Bungie assures us it will be awesome, but we’ve kind of got to take they’re word for it at this point.)

      Caveats:
You need a broadband connection, XBox Live Gold, and (not officially confirmed by Bungie, but published by MicroSoft) 20 Gigs of memory on your console Hard Drive. (This likely includes space for the first two expansion packs.)

    1. Each of the Halos were made for PC right? I mean this is a Microsoft exclusive isn’t it? Like Halo? So Microsoft is definitely going to take advantage of PC sales.

      1. It is not Microsoft exclusive.
It’s releasing on the XBox 360, XBOne, PS 3, and PS4 simultaneously.
Insofar as it’s exclusive, it is Playstation that has paid for limited-time exclusives.

There is talk that there will be a PC version, but not anytime very soon.

    2. Eh… you’ll be waiting a while. Bungie doesn’t do PC ports anymore. While Microsoft owned them, they did port Halo 1&2 (badly), but nothing after that was ported. (notably, the MS studios that now makes the Halo games also doesn’t port them to PC)

Bungie may be multiplatform now, but PC isn’t one of their platforms.
