Found here. “In Space, EVERYTHING is Hard-Boiled” would be a great seed for a longer story, if only I knew how to write hard-boiled detective/alien stories. I’d probably have to resort to bringing in a guy with a laser pistol every other page.

You ought to look at the “Flea” stories by Donald Westlake. Though he’s more known for the “Parker” crime novels, he wrote some engaging SF.
Just gonna say, Howard “Schlock Mercenary” Tayler made the leap to Cthuluesque horror … Write a very thin plot, *do not* fall in love with it or anything for you’ll probably end up tossing it at least 3 times … Then write the damn story.
