More on this VGA/RCA thing.

My comments section suggested that I put up photos, so here they are:

The adapter and the hardware involved. The monitor has VGA and HDMI ports.

  1. You have the wrong cable, that is for outputting the VGA signal to an old-school TV with composite (yellow cable) or S-Video (black multi-in connector) inputs.
    .
You need a converter to do what you need to do. Like this: https://www.amazon.com/Composite-S-Video-Converter-Screen-Version/dp/B003NUN7DG
    .
That will be just video. You will need a separate rca audio (red /white) out to 3.5mm stereo headphone jack cable for the audio to go into your line-in jack.

    1. You linked to a composite video converter–he probably wants a *component* converter like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00579ETMY

Also, while Googling, I found a mention that some DVD players require you to specify the output you’re using in the menu, or they will always output to one connector.

  2. This kind of thing is why I bought a TV (with HDMI input) for use as a monitor. It already has all these inputs and it’s own tuner.

  3. Yeah, as I thought, that’s a VGA to RCA converter. It won’t convert RCA to VGA. You’ll need a converter box, like Jeff Weimer suggested. However, since it looks like your DVD player also outputs component video, you can make use of better converters (like this https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-107113-Component-YpbPr-Converter/dp/B009GUQYBO) if spending a little more money isn’t out of the question. You’d also need a headphone jack to headphone jack cable to run the audio from the converter box to the tv because VGA does not carry sound. So, check your tv to make sure it has a headphone jack for audio in.

  4. As I am cheap, I don’t like to say this but, $35 Amazon, new blu-ray player.
    And they have HDMI out.

    1. It’s the PRINCIPLE of the thing at this point. By God I am going to hook up this damned DVD player and make it work. …And then probably never use it because I can’t find the remote.

      1. At some point it’s OK to go “you know what? This is dumb and I’m not going to fall for the sunk-cost fallacy” and take it outside with a sledgehammer and go all Office Space on it and then buy a new player with, as irusro says, HDMI out.
