They’re planning to mess with my Coke Zero.

It’s not happening here, but in Australia and New Zealand Coca-Cola is trying out a new soft drink that supposedly tastes just like regular Coke but without the calories.  If it works out, I lose a diet soda that I can actually drink. Supposedly I wouldn’t care, because the other drink would taste fine, but how often does THAT happen? I got lucky with Coke Zero.

Personally, I think that Coca-Cola should stop trying to make everybody happy and start up with core principle maintenance.  Drop the high-fructose corn syrup. Make the regular Cokes with real sugar again, keep the Coke Zero and stop trying to chase the ‘original flavor’ mirage, then start practicing their ‘go aways’ and ‘shut ups’ to all those people out there with pet hobbyhorses.  And stop the dang apologizing for everything.  It’s not like they’re putting cocaine in the mix anymore.

  1. Use of HF corn syrup ain’t going anywhere as long as it’s significantly cheaper to buy then sugar. (so that’s 2 subsidized ag industry cartels one has to fight, sugar producers and corn producers) At this point enough Mexican bottled Coke and occasional “throwback” batches are produced to cover the fans of the original flavor.

People get attached to the flavors of these diet drinks too. regular Diet Coke uses aspertame, Coke Zero uses sucralose, and wasn’t there a 3rd I’m forgetting? Each has a different flavor that has a fan base. Personally, I’ve never found a diet drink I liked much. Always something… off. But I found I tolerated Dr. Pepper 10 (a 10 calorie mix of aspertame and a dash of corn syrup) the best.

“It’s not like they’re putting cocaine in the mix anymore” Hi! Captain Pedantic here. Actually, cocaine content is inherent to the use of Coca leaves as a flavor ingredient. Coca Cola Co. has to remove the cocaine before adding the leaves to the mix and then sell it to the government for medical use.

    1. Diet Coke – aspartame
Coke Zero – aspartame and acesulfame potassium
Tab – sodium cyclamate (original formula)
      Tab – saccharin (after 1970-ish in U.S.)
Strangely, some non-U.S. Coke Zero uses cyclamate

Pepsi’s been experimenting with stevia, but to a significant percentage of the population, it tastes awful.

I just buy the mexican import coca-cola in glass bottles and drink it *very rarely* – usually with a pizza.

      1. Coke’s also doing Stevia. Green bottle–called Coke Life, IIRC. Tastes different from regular Coke, but doesn’t have the nastiness of diet sodas.

  2. I like drinking about 1 can of soda a day. Don’t really care for the taste of any diet soda, so I was just buying store brands. Recently, I’ve been trying tonic water mixed with fruit juice, which sort of works, but either needs a lot of fruit juice or grenadine to be drinkable.

    1. I’ve found that the best way to make tonic drinkable is to add freshly squeezed lime. And vodka.

        1. Back when I was in fast food, I used to make myself “double syrup” sodas ..
