Tweet of the Day, Can I Get It In Blue edition?

What? I like blue.

Also: judging from the ground there and the fact that it’s a motorized walking-leg chair I’m guessing that this clip is from Burning Man.  That means that I probably could get one in blue, but it’d be hand-crafted, I’d need to wait a couple of years, and it would cost more than our next car.  Which means that I’m going to have to use boring old human feet to get around for a while longer.

Still.  Ain’t engineering grand?  I’ve always thought so.

  1. It doesn’t look like it would be very stable on much of an incline, and I wonder how it would do on even slightly rough ground. And what is the power source?

Still, an interesting prototype, and I agree, blue is a lovely color.

  2. That does strongly resemble Black Rock City, yes.

That said .. Black Rock is an absolutely brutal environment for mechanical devices. IF this one survived .. it’s a really good design.

You could also probably pay for a copy of the design, find a local metal fab shop to cut and assemble the pieces, get one of Earl Scheib’s cousins to paint it, find some engineering students to help with assembly, and indeed have one in blue.

And yeah, you’re probably right on the pricetag, too. Still, you could walk the kids to school ..

    1. Those legs are basically Strandbeest-style designs. You used to be able to get little desk-sized ones from places like ThinkGeek, IIRC. Probably wouldn’t be too hard to build something like that if you had access to a shop, an one of those kits for a reference. (And, obvs, the right mix of skills).

      1. As with much of Burning Man art, this design screams “guy with skills and imagination decides to have a little fun” ..

  3. My question is “How does it turn?” Does he have to get off and jerk it around? Are the 2 sides on different motors? Is he trying to perfect that thing before the Mummy comes forth and demands a conveyance worthy of an undead overlord?
