Note, by the way, that Captain Marvel is wearing both the green and the red-gold suits in this flick. Also note: I’m not really qualified to judge the references in this one. It looks like it’s going deep into the Skrull Secret Invasion stuff, which is… nice, right? I’m a DC guy who is just along for the ride and having a good time.
The modern helmet and Chewie (her cat, which will be named something else because Mouse) are my favorite references, since I’ve read relatively recent series.
They did change the name, to Goose.

I don’t see why they’d change the name, now that they’re all Mice…
That article I found suggested that they decided to change Danvers from being a Star Wars fan to a Top Gun fan. And I can’t believe that I missed the cat’s butt in the first poster!
Gotta mind those copyright lawyers …
.
Also, Top Gun aligns with the story arc and vibe they’re apparently after .. old-school ’80s stuff ..
.
.. hope it works out for ’em.

p.s. random trivia – one service or another switched back to leather jackets for pilots after Top Gun came out “because the kids signing up expected the jackets to be leather” .. wonder what the kids signing up after this’ll expect.
I figured it was beancounters deciding the Star Wars rights cost for the name Chewie was too high a cost for this movie, but this is an entirely acceptable explanation.
Secret Invasion involved the wholesale replacement of superheroes by Skrulls that were able to duplicate the powers of those heroes, and had access to their memories. But Skrulls have attempted to infiltrate Earth on multiple occasions (their initial appearance was way back in an early issue of Fantastic Four), and this movie appears to be focused on the Kree-Skrull War from back in the ’80s (I think; though I’m not overly familiar with that particular storyline).
In any case, we know what eventually happens to the Kree – they’re beaten and conquered by Xandar shortly before the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
Now that Disney has Fox, I think it’s time that the in-setting galactic superpower made its presence felt. Hopefully we’ll start to see some Shi’arr before long.
What junior said re: Skrulls and Secret Invasion.
I recommend the animated Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes for a good episode of Secret Invasion. Alas, not included on any of the streaming services, but can rent on Prime.
