Book of the Week: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

This is coming early because it’s gonna be a hectic weekend. Anyway: I’m reading CS Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe to my eldest kid* — and man, but did I forget the resonances in this one! You can tell that it was written by somebody whose country had just gone through a desperate fight for life against a ruthless enemy with secret police and a taste for murder. Now I’m kind of curious as to how the rest of them read. Guess I’ll find out!

  1. I was at a lecture a couple years ago where it was suggested that the 7 books have themes based on the 7 planetary gods, starting with Jupiter. The only ones I can remember are Jupiter for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, The Moon/Artemis for The Silver Chair, and Saturn for The Last Battle. It was an interesting lecture at the least.

I think Mercury was the theme for The Horse and his Boy, but I am not sure. That one is about twins and journeys and boxing, so it might also be about The Sun/Apollo.
