‘Double-Barrelled Destiny:’ Shotguns, to me, have the fundamental feel of a fantasy weapon. I feel that Conan the Barbarian might disdain many modern weapons (he’d use them, but he’d disdain them). But double-barreled shotguns? Yeah, you could put one in his hands and it wouldn’t look ridiculous.

Awesome. I have an entire fantasy setting based around a character armed with two 1848 Colt Dragoons. (My crude attempt at creating a distinctly American fantasy.)
Pump and lever work too.
As does a revolver.
Bolt action? Not so much.
Actually, rightly or wrongly, I had the impression that Conan was the practical sort who would happily go with whatever worked as long as it wasn’t evil magic. I have no problem picturing him becoming proficient at guns and taking like a duck to water with any aspect of modern warfare that permitted the participation of mercenaries. Now how he would end up as the king of a first rank power in today’s world is an interesting question. I don’t know how many nations would be happy with someone who strangles their current boss before taking over. 🙂
Gunpowder and firearms were too disruptive to the feudal systems, though .. much less training than being a knight, much less labor needed to support knights and barons and whatnot.
I can sorta see Conan as lord of a vasty mountain fortress in a (very *very* violent) quasi-Switzerland setup .. surrounded by nations with kings and dukes and earls and knights, thousands of knights with hundreds of thousands of serfs to do the work of supporting the armies of knights … and Conan just has a good source of saltpeter and some folks who understand kitchen chemistry.
Play the kings against one another .. blow their walls down and their knights up as needed.
