So… GHOSTWIRE: TOKYO is fifteen bucks on Amazon.

That’s the Deluxe edition of GHOSTWIRE: TOKYO. It’s fifteen bucks on Amazon – and eighty bucks on Steam. Can somebody explain what’s going on, here? I mean, I already had my eldest kid look at it, get young eyes on the situation; he’s confirming that I’m not nuts. It’s the same game – heck, according to the reviews, it’s just a box containing a Steam code*.

Now that I’ve safely bought it: what gives?

*Which would be annoying, if the game was eighty bucks on Amazon, too. I will happily wait two days for physical delivery in order to save sixty-five dollars, though.

  1. The Escapist YouTube did a fun video about the package with the digital code, I’ll see if I can find it.

  2. At a guess? Microsoft playing with price points.

They released the most recent game from that company (Tango Gameworks) about two months ago at $30 (Hi Fi Rush), and it’s a much better game than Ghostwire.
Ghostwire has been out for a year, is already “free” on GamePass, and (since the parent company at the time the game was developed was desperate for cash) it’s heavy on micro-transactions. Not to mention the goodwill Tango Gameworks earned by recently releasing a fun game without bloat, grinding, or micro-transactions. Or that until recently it was expected that older games would drop to the $20 price point.

      1. Okay, that makes sense. Still, it ended up costing me ten bucks cash money, and I’ll spend that much for an in-depth virtual tour of Tokyo where I can zap ghosts. 🙂

        1. True.
From what I understand, the zeks at Zenimax pushed hard to make the game more like Assassin’s Creed, and most of the weaknesses come from that.

The unique parts of gameplay look great. The story beats I’ve seen were solid. I just haven’t wanted to face up to the grind or clearing the maps.
