Somebody asked me today what my favorite book was. And since I amended my answer to say, “Naomi Novik’s Scholomance series was the best fantasy fiction written in the last five years,” well. Here you go.

Purchased and read on your suggestion, and enjoyed! Quite good.

This is a superb … work, let’s say. (I regard it more as a single, tightly-plotted story than a trilogy.)
It is also a great (though quite dark) coming-of-age story. Highly recommended.
I liked it, except for the completely gratuitous lesbian sex scene in the third book.
That annoyed me greatly. It was out of character, added nothing to the plot, and squick.
I get that publishers demand their authors include such scenes, but I do not have to like it.
