Largely because of this:
Likened to [David] Ayer’s own End of Watch, Bright takes place in a world that blends contemporary reality with a fantasy realm. The story follows an Orc cop ([Joel] Edgerton) who is partnered with a human cop ([Will] Smith). Their ordinary beat takes a decidedly unordinary turn when they wind up coming into the possession of a massively powerful (and highly illegal) weapon: a magic wand.
…OK, yeah. Orc/Human buddy cop flick set in modern LA? Gonna be on Netflix? This sounds intriguing. I don’t want to jump up and down in glee, or anything – you get burned a lot when it comes to fantasy-themed films – but if they can pull it off it should be a hoot. I look forward to watching it when it’s done.
So .. it’s “Alien Nation” (the TV series, not the movie) only in a swords-and-sorcery motif?
.
Yes, it .. could work really well .. but then, some say “Alien Nation” worked really well too, and it barely got a season.
.
Mew
Yeah, that was my thought as well. Although Alien Nation was more or less dealing with drug issues, and this sounds more like gun or WMD issues. And that makeup job looks more like a bad birthmark than a different species to me.
So, back to “Please don’t suck, please don’t suck…”
I was kind of hoping that he’d be tricked out like the chap who was wearing a skull for a hat in “Return of the King”.
Oh. It is the Will Smith I thought it was. Interesting. And Shadowrun/Borderlands-y too. The old Borderlands, not the one on Pandora.
I’m cautiously optimistic about this one.
