I dunno; this seems a bit… off.
Maybe because the people who did M3GAN were going for the teenager demographic? I don’t think Honest Trailers is actually targeting that one. Anyway: all I know is, my older teenager thought the movie was awesome. So, you know, success.
Spoiler warning: it’s not shocking at all. “It’s official! Atomic Monster and Blumhouse’s campy techno horror movie M3EGAN is getting a sequel! Universal Pictures has green-lit the movie titled M3GAN 2.0, and it will hit theaters on January 17th, 2025.” M3GAN currently grosses at just under one hundred million dollars worldwide, on a twelve million dollar budget. It’s still also showing in theaters, so it’ll probably make a good bit more than that, too. Green-lighting a sequel is not exactly a hard business decision to make.
It’s also a fun, good horror movie. That actually does make a difference, sometimes.
I understand why Akela Cooper (the screenwriter for M3GAN) first wrote it for the R rating. It would have been fine as an R-rated movie, too. But it might not have been as accessible for teens that way, and that movie apparently was getting a lot of teen interest*.
Cooper is pretty philosophical about things: “No shade to Universal, love them, and I understand that once the trailer went viral, teenagers got involved and you want them to be able to see it.” It’s not like they butchered her script, just let a few people live and cut away quicker**. End result? The critics still loved it and it’s already made its money back in the first weekend. They’re probably greenlighting M3GAN for a sequel, even as we speak. That kind of success can buy a decent amount of equanimity.
