#rsrh Bev Perdue’s fracking veto… accidentally overruled.

Background here: essentially, Perdue vetoed a bill permitting fracking in North Carolina, and the legislature overruled it.  Anyway…

There are so many puns that could be made from this story.

A veto by North Carolina’s Democratic governor was overridden Monday night because a Democrat in the state House cast the deciding vote, by accident.

The lawmaker, Becky Carney, accidentally pushed a green button at her desk voting for the override, instead of a different button. Under state rules, legislators can change their votes if they make a mistake, but only if the changed vote wouldn’t affect the result.

In Carney’s case, she was the 72nd person to vote for the override, the exact number needed to do so.

So.
Many.
Puns.

48 hours later: Jan Crawford’s explosive, unverified, Supreme Court allegations.

Executive summary: two days ago CBS News Chief Political and Legal Correspondent Jan Crawford authored an article that alleged that Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts ‘went wobbly’ on Thursday’s Supreme Court decision for reasons unrelated to his determination of the legal merits of the case. Ms. Crawford also alleged that there is ongoing fallout between Roberts and the four Justices that dissented with the 5-4 majority that held that Obamacare was legal as a tax; and she is at least insinuating that Roberts’ decision was based on calculation of how the decision would be received by the American Left and/or the Media (but I repeat myself).  As you might imagine, this story has gotten a little play in conservative and Republican news sources, in much the same way that the Amazon river is somewhat damp.

Now, the above is a rather serious allegation about Chief Justice Roberts.  And it is in fact an allegation that – if true – is very problematical.  But what is also problematical is that the entire story rests on two uncorroborated, anonymous sources.  Now, admittedly, Jan Crawford is a very well-respected, very knowledgeable, and very well-connected reporter on the Supreme Court.  She is, in fact, more well-respected, more knowledgeable, and more well-connected than I am on this matter.  But… her story is still based on two uncorroborated, anonymous sources; and in the forty-eight hours I have not in fact seen anything that would back up the allegations in her story.  The closest to it that I have seen is John Fund’s article; John indicates that his anonymous sources are telling him that Roberts had been pretty much equivocal about tossing the entire law all along.  Now that, if true, is a significant difference from Crawford’s lede “Chief Justice John Roberts initially sided with the Supreme Court’s four conservative justices to strike down the heart of President Obama’s health care reform law, the Affordable Care Act, but later changed his position and formed an alliance with liberals to uphold the bulk of the law, according to two sources with specific knowledge of the deliberations. ” – and it doesn’t actually address any suggestion that Roberts changed his mind on non-judicial grounds. Shenanigans in NY-13: did Charlie Rangel win, or lose?

Apparently nobody’s really sure at the moment: original reports had Rangel winning by 1,034 votes. However, what can be fairly described as tabulation “irregularities” have come to light, thus causing Rangel’s lead over contender Adriano Espaillat to shrink to 802 votes. With about 2,000 absentee/affidavit votes remaining, the primary election is still very much now in doubt.  It’s also now going to the courts.

Of course.

So, I’m playing Mass Effect 3 again for my second runthrough…

…and I’ve stopped for a moment to check: is there any combination of actions in the first two games that, when done, would allow me the option of going to the salarian homeworld and putting three assault rifle rounds in the head of the dalatrass for her suggestion that there’s a plausible alternate universe there where I’d sell out the krogan?  Specifically, Wrex?

No?

Pity.  Maybe that can be in the DLC.

PS: I mean, seriouslyThis pissed me off the first time, and I haven’t noticeably gotten any less pissed off about it since.

#rsrh The Canary-free Democratic Party.

This was originally going to be a post on snickering at the sight of Virginia Democrats futilely trying to convince President Obama to stop getting in the way of offshore oil drilling for their state – the President simply DOES NOT LIKE increased domestic hydrocarbon energy production, and the sooner that the Democrats understand that they’re being overruled by a Luddite, the happier everyone’s going to be – but I got distracted by something in passing*.  The current split in Virginia’s Congressional delegation? 8/3 Republican/Democratic.  What was it, after 2008? 5/6 Republican/Democratic.  What’s it going to be, after November? …At this rate, 8/3 Republican/Democratic; or maybe 7/4.

Look, obviously you can’t do anything like a one-to-one correspondence between Congressional elections and Presidential ones.  But if Barack Obama wants to win Virginia again then he should start figuring out why it is that he apparently has no coat-tails at all there this election cycle.  And no, flipping VA-02 again will not be enough.

#rsrh The Daily Beast hit with a virus?

I was going to comment on Barack Obama’s Air Force One fundraising phone call – like Hot Air, my immediate verdict is “Likely legal, but deliciously desperate, bitter begging on a depressed and despondent President’s pathetic part” – but this is what I got when I clicked on the article this morning:

Well, that’s embarrassing…

So, @jimgeraghty was talking up @bradthor ‘s latest book…

…in today’s Morning Jolt.  He thought that Thor’s Black List, was pretty good, and accessible even if you haven’t read the series; I’m admittedly a bit hesitant about that last bit, and I don’t know whether I want to spend the resources* to get caught up on Thor’s Scot Harvath series. Is it any good?
