Alternate plan: do the work up front during world building.
Then game prep is mainly reviewing your notes about what the players have done, and supplying whatever consequences and opportunities seem appropriate.
.
Also handy is a book of vignettes you prepare ahead of time. Just short little scenes to flesh out the world a bit, and of course, cause problems for the players. “As you return to your car, you see a youth dressed in the colors of a local gang trying to break your driver’s side window.” “The bard in the tavern recites (poem stanza)”. Replenish as needed.

Hey, I ran 5 days a week when I was deployed. I learned how to do it on the fly.
Of course, now I can’t run a scripted adventure well.
I just want to say how much I like the phrase “To the bullet points!”.
i could have used this article, way back when i was GMing while drunk or something. it got silly quite often.
