Some Outer Worlds gameplay.

OUTER WORLDS looks interesting, although I’m curious as to why all the stealth. But then, I always do. It’s odd: I happily stealth my way through games, but I get annoyed when they make me do it too often.

Will have to think about this one, though: it’s only available via Epic on PC right now, and that’s a pain in the butt every time I try to use it.

  1. I like a good stealth mechanic, and environments set up to use it.

I’m much less fond of stealth as a superpower. (Did I abuse the hell out of it in Elder Scrolls and Fallout? You know I did. Putting a grenade sans pin in the pocket of a Super Mutant never fails to entertain!)

I actively dislike the “mandatory stealth mission” most of the time. The first Gears of War did it right, but most of the time it’s mood whiplash.

On the flipside, I despise it in a stealth game where you suddenly run into an unavoidable combat monster of a boss. Especially if it’s skill-buy, and maxing stealth means you don’t have a prayer against that meatwall, so you have to revert several saves back and replay several missions to reallocate points. (I’m looking at you, Alpha Protocol. It’s a cult classic for a reason, and I love it to pieces, but… Advice if you ever play it: pistol is the strongest combat skill by far, even though you have ready access to military grade rifles and shotguns. Stealth is the most important skill. Your handlers do not have perfect knowledge, will sometimes give you bad advice, and will use you as a pawn to advance their own agendas that will not necessarily coincide with yours. Most of all… DO NOT GO TO MOSCOW FIRST.)

    1. There’s an Orc thug in Raven Rock who is just waiting for me to have the right skill set to reverse-pickpocket a Frenzy poison in his inventory.
