The ‘I Never Played Halo’ HALO trailer.

Is this a sign that the HALO series will be good? Bad? A screaming disaster? I mean, you should always assume that about adaptations of video games to the big screen; but what about the small one?

And can you even play HALO on a PC, anyway?

  1. Microsoft bought Bungie to acquire Halo, previously a Mac/PC game (emphasis on Mac) .. and while Microsoft later spun Bungie back out, they kept Halo.

Oh, and the Win10 “digital assistant” named Cortana? Originated in Halo.

Yes, you could play Halo on a PC ..

    Mew

p.s. just get the xbox .. you know you want one ..

    1. The sequence is misleading.
MS bought Bungie to get Halo, but Halo was not yet made, and Bungie as a stand-alone company did not have the resources to make it.
The game launched with the original XBox and was the example chosen by MS to show off what it’s system could do. (It was available to computers running a MS OS pretty early on, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t Day One.)

It was Marathon (a Mac game) where Bungie showed off it’s innovation with FPS, and the real time tactical Myth: The Fallen Lords (PC) that showed off their worldbuilding and epic sweep of storyline chops. Then they had a flop with Oni (which was evidently a good game, but it wouldn’t run on my hardware. And I was bleeding edge PC Master Race at the time).

Yes, you can play HALO on PC. Easily. (MS is actively pushing crossplay/play anywhere, backwards compatibility, compatibility across MS products, etc.) If you take advantage of one of them their many “try GamePass for X weeks free” promotions, you can download and play the game on your PC no problem (or even stream it from the cloud if that’s your thing).

There have been some continuity issues with Halo over the past 2 games, but as long as it sticks to the fifteen years of the first 6? games and all the official canon expanded universe novels and spin offs, they should have plenty of material to keep them going for many, many seasons.

  2. It looks pretty solidly in prequel territory, but that’s well covered by canon. About the only deviation I see is that I’m not aware of humanity knowing about the existence of the ringworlds before the events of Halo: Combat Evolved.

Background: humanity reached the stars, colonized worlds, and eventually made first contact with a Covenant of alien races. The prophets ruling the Covenant reacted with horror, and declared a holy war of genocide against humanity. (Something about humanity being destined to release a Flood of evil and destruction across the universe. See also: the events of the first few games.)
Humanity is badly outnumbered and has inferior tech. The federation government is an authoritarian nightmare, but one that is actively trying to protect its civilians by every means at its disposal. (Many of which are ethically dubious, but generally preferable to having every man, woman, and child slaughtered.) One of these is the Spartan project to create supersoldiers through genetic enhancement and bio mechanical augmentation. The most famous member is John 117, the iconic Master Chief.

    1. Also, uploading human consciousness to serve as AI. Which works pretty well, except that after five years, they have a pronounced tendency to go “rampant”. (That’s crazy, with shades of Lawnmower Man.) It’s kind of important to unplug them before then.

  3. It’s another franchise where the true meat of the lore is in the books, not the games. As far as this trailer goes, it looks a bit like it’s trying too hard and doesn’t quite have the budget to be really good. The live action Cortana doesn’t look good to my eye, but would have to see how well the actress pulls it off in the show. They kept Jen Taylor as Cortana, which is nice, but seeing her as the character feels weird. I’m not the biggest Steve Blum fan, so hearing a new Master Chief voice is welcome. I dunno. Seems like 50/50 on being ok or terrible and doesn’t feel like a show that will be genuinely good.
