A possible escalation of Hillary Clinton’s email scandal.
Maybe this is something. Maybe this is nothing. But it looms: oh, my, yes it does.
A federal judge appears willing to order the State Department to question former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her lawyer about the possible existence of backup copies of thousands of her personal emails.
The order, which could come by the end of next week, may lead to definitive proof about whether copies exist of the roughly 31,000 emails Clinton claims were personal and deleted from her private server.
It’s always perjury that they get you on. Always. So let’s have a rousing round of tell-the-nice-Fed-what-you-did. It might be a hoot.

U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said on Saturday she did not send or receive classified information on a private email account while she was secretary of state.
“I did not send nor receive anything that was classified at the time,” Clinton told reporters at a campaign event.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton sent at least four messages from her personal email server while she was US secretary of state that contained information derived from classified material, according to a US government inspector general.
The four emails “were classified when they were sent and are classified now,” Andrea Williams, a spokesperson for I Charles McCullough, inspector general of the intelligence community, tells Byron Tau of the Wall Street Journal.
So, why *did* John Kerry pick January 2016 to roll out the Clinton emails?
Basically, the State Department announced that they’d be releasing all of the Hillary Clinton emails that they have at the beginning of next year. Admittedly, a federal judge is having none of that, but never mind that right now. You see, Hot Air is questioning the timing:
January of 2016? Could it have come at a worse time? The official beginning of the primaries will be only weeks away, and by that point in time even Hillary will have had to have started answering some questions, making public appearances and talking to reporters. If they’d all just been dumped this winter she might have been able to file any unpleasant results under the “old news” category as she and her husband usually do, but this schedule promises some fresh meat just as the election is heating up on a national level.
If John Kerry were seriously considering another run at the White House I’d almost think that he planned this release date himself for maximum damage.

Lois Lerner cursed out conservatives using her IRS email account.
Let’s say that I had some oversight authority over liberal groups or individuals. Or that I could do things to make life more difficult for those groups. And let’s say that I wrote the right-wing equivalent of what Lois Lerner wrote about conservatives (according to her, we’re apparently a*sholes, crazies, and teRrorists)…

…using my official email address. Two observations about that would inevitably follow:
- Liberal groups would go ballistic, whether or not I was linked to any kind of detrimental activities towards them.
- They would have a point.
I understand that people don’t want to be told that they can’t have the luxury of a private opinion, but: I don’t want IRS personnel to think that they get to have the luxury of a private opinion, especially when it involves people that they may be auditing. And I really, really don’t want that opinion expressed via public property. That’s an irs.gov email account she’s using. My taxes pay to maintain that email account. I’m giving her resources: I expect a basic amount of professionalism in return.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano doesn’t believe in using email.
“I think email just sucks up time,” Napolitano told an incredulous group of reporters on Tuesday, speaking at a breakfast hosted by The Christian Science Monitor.
Napolitano, who said she doesn’t text or “Twitter” either, said she may use email “at some point,” but right now, it’s not in the cards.
I love the ‘incredulous’ bit – because no, I don’t believe that, either. I’m pretty sure, in fact, that Janet Napolitano is using email, only she’s Richard Windsoring it. I wonder what her name looks like when you anagram it…

Not to be mean to Kevin Drum…
…actually, that’s a bit of a fib; being mean to Kevin Drum (and any other Mother Jones flunky) is a bit of a social and civic responsibility these days. Anyway, he was just found whining “You know, if I’d wanted Dick Cheney as president I would have just voted for him” in response to the White House’s desire to expand the ability of law enforcement to read email headers without a court order.
