And they turned off the comments, going in. …Which was the right play, there. Something for everybody in this one, I think. Or perhaps “a pox on all the houses, including Honest Trailer’s.” Seriously, they ended this one kind of yelling at themselves.
I really didn’t think that the new Ghostbusters was that bad, honestly. They edited it too much and lost an important scene or two, but it wasn’t Batman & Robin or anything. But that’s apparently a minority opinion, these days.
I just saw it, in fact. Now, to clarify: I liked it better than Ghostbusters 2. But then, I also liked Ghostbusters 2, more or less; so my tastes may be suspect, here. Still, the people who made this flick pretty clearly liked the original Ghostbusters; they liked the engineering toys and the made-up pseudo-scientific jargon and they truly loved the slime. So they made a vehicle for a bunch of pretty good actors to goof around in and it looks like everybody had a fine old time doing so. I have no complaints. It’s not the greatest movie that I’ll see all year, but I had a good time.
Ghostbusters: Ecto Force is the name of the (animated) show; and it is apparently going to be set in the near future, where it will finally realize Peter Venkman’s dream of having Ghostbuster franchises in metropolitan areas throughout the globe. Ivan Reitman to direct, which is good to hear, no matter where you stand on the current Ghostbusters situation*. Of course, it must be kind of nerve-wracking, working on a project where you’re more or less inviting people to compare your product to The Real Ghostbusters** – but then, nobody forced them to do a new Ghostbusters series, did they? …and I wish that major theaters would show more old movies (yes, I’m calling Ghostbusters ‘old’) on a regular basis. It was pleasant to go see a film like that on the big screen, given that that’s what it was really designed for; and there are decades and decades of films that the theater system could run through. Mind you, I understand that more and more theaters are doing this sort of thing, but… I’m not sure. It feels like they’re missing out on an opportunity and need to change things up, but I can’t put my finger on what exactly needs to be changed.
Anyway. It was a good evening.
In select theaters, so if you’re looking for a good pick for a date night this would be it. I never actually saw this in theaters, either… I think. I mean, it came out when I was 14 so I could have very easily missed it at that particular time in my life.
Limited release, so check your local listings. Also: actual conversation with my wife.
WIFE: Hey, did you know that they’re re-releasing Ghostbust…
ME: YES. June 8th and 12.
WIFE: Isn’t the 8th a babysitter night?
ME. …Yes. Yes, it is.
WIFE (who doesn’t really go to movies any more): Do you want us to go see it?
ME: I HAVE THE BEST WIFE.
You’d almost think that it was intended for kids, or something.
But that’s crazy talk! All video games are meant for people of my demographic! …Which, I realized while enduring a PPP robopoll, has permanently shifted from the ‘under 45’ category to the ‘over 45’ category. I was not pleased.

OK, this does not… look entirely awful, yes.
There’s an interesting difference that you can see in the trailer itself, in fact. In the first Ghostbusters movies, proton packs and guns, despite the name, were fundamentally imagined as tools; they had a tool-like appearance, and were clearly designed with an industrial aesthetic. This crew thinks of proton technology as being weapons. This is going to be more of an action-comedy film than its predecessors, I think.

Also: it’s a freaking trailer for a trailer for a movie. I was going to not put it up, for exactly that reason. But it’s so bloody awful in its malignant promise of utter We Have No Idea Why The First Film Was Fun that I feel compelled to show it anyway. I guess that this means that they won, after all?
Also: based on pictures here I expect that the LEGO video game will be dropping pretty dang quickly after the film comes out. Oh, wait, right. Not every person out there has kids addicted to the LEGO video games. Never mind…
