Movie of the Week: Men In Black.

There are very few films that I would call ‘pitch-perfect,’ and Men in Black is one of them. Nothing to add, nothing to take away, and all in good fun.

And the “Mr. Jones. Mr. Smith.” was perfect. Somebody hopefully got a raise for that.

And so, adieu to Shoot ‘Em Up.

Movie of the Week: Shoot ‘Em Up.

Why Shoot ‘Em Up? Because to quote the classic gamer manual Munchkins Guide to Power Gaming, The Gun Is Your Skill List, that’s why.

Now hush, and wave good-bye to Toy Story 2.

Movie of the Week: Toy Story 2.

Mostly because the sequel to Toy Story 2 is out (Toy Story 3), and by all accounts it’s yet another goram spectacular Pixar movie. It’s starting to get embarrassing, the way that Pixar can’t seem to help but make insanely good movies…

We thus escape Escape from New York.

Movie of the Week: Escape from New York.

The sequel was awful – except for the bit with Bruce Campbell in it – but Escape from New York was pretty good, as long as you understood going in that your disbelief would not so much be suspended as it would be expelled, then shipped off to military school. One of John Carpenter’s better ones… and it’s always frustrating, because you never know with that director whether or not he’s going to be pretty darn good, or just plain bad. Just saying, that’s all.

And so we shine the sun on Daybreakers. But for not long enough.

Movie of the Week: Daybreakers.

Not deep cinema by any stretch of the imagination: but Daybreakers was a pretty good popcorn flick and it won’t ladle too much dead weight onto the eventual sequel.

And thus, no more The War of the Worlds. At least, not until we invent a working FTL drive.

Movie of the Week: War of the Worlds.

This is the classic movie The War of the Worlds, not the later Canadian series; not that I didn’t like the latter, of course. Pretty good stuff.

And so, farewell to The Musketeer… no doubt through a handy window.

Movie of the Week: The Musketeer.

Yes, The Musketeer was almost terminally goofy, but I liked it. It was good fodder for the campaign that I was in at the time.

And so, farewell to Con Air… which was also good gaming fodder.

Movie of the Week: Con Air.

OK, sophisticated cinema Con Air is not. But it has John Malkovich in it, and you can sort of tell that John found the entire experience sort of restful, really. Sometimes it’s nice not to have to focus too hard on your motivation, know what I mean?

And so, farewell to Small Soldiers – which had much the same appeal, when you think about it.

Movie of the Week: Small Soldiers

I will not apologize for liking Small Soldiers:

This was a movie made for every eleven year old who looked at his parents’ garage, looked at his action figures, and sighed at the tyranny of adults. Plus, Dennis Leary, in the part of Deus Ex Machina.

So, farewell to It Happened Here, with a sigh of relief that, in point of fact, it did not.

It Happened Here is speculative: I’m trying to convince myself that owning it is worth almost a month’s allowance. There isn’t a local library that has it, you see (amazing how more useful a source that gets in general once you have kids).

And farewell to Firefox, which probably is at the library. I wonder whether that’s a reflection on my priorities, or its.
