In the Mail: Shadows of Annihilation/The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Vol. 12

Not exactly the most congruent choices, to be sure: but I am large. I contain multitudes. And I’ve been looking forward to reading both Shadows of Annihilation and The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Vol. 12 for some time. Let my wife read the latter while I finished off the former, of course. She loves the Squirrel Girl comics as much as I do.

RIP, Steve Ditko.

Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Squirrel Girl. Steve Ditko was an extremely private person, and it is unclear if he had any family or loved ones.  But I will be a lucky man if I ever create something half as iconic as Spider-Man. That character is one of the images that they will remember from our era.  There are worse legacies to have; in fact, there aren’t that many that are better.

Milana Vayntrub cast as Squirrel Girl for New Warriors.

I… don’t have an opinion, actually. I don’t have any knowledge of Milana Vayntrub as an actress, so she might be good. She might be bad.  She doesn’t look much like Doreen from the comics, though:

Squirrel Girl getting TV show: “New Warriors.”

Got tipped to this in the comments section by Constant Reader acat.  Too early to tell how good/bad it’s going to be, yet. Maybe it’ll be OK?

Marvel is expanding its relationship with Freeform and getting into the comedy space.

In a competitive situation with other cable and streaming outlets bidding, the younger-skewing Disney-owned cable network has handed out a straight-to-series order for New Warriors, the comic book powerhouse’s first 30-minute live-action comedy. Cougar Town and Scrubs alum Kevin Biegel is near a deal to pen the script and serve as showrunner on the comedy.

New Warriors is definitely going to have Squirrel Girl in it, and she’s being described as a ‘natural leader.’  That kind of implies that she’ll be running the team. Also: Freeform’s executives sound like they’re kind of pumped to have gotten this show, specifically. I’d rather that they tried to get the character right, and failed, than if they didn’t try at all. Continue reading Squirrel Girl getting TV show: “New Warriors.”

Wait, just how many superheroes are going to be in Infinity War?

Is this number correct?

Perfect. Squirrel Girl is in! Of course that means that the number of characters in Avengers: Infinity War just increased from 67 to 68, and Joe Russo said of his brother Anthony that he’d “die from exhaustion” if one more character was added to the film.

I would imagine so. Look, I’d love to see a Squirrel Girl movie, obviously – I’m fond of the character – but that’s a heck of a lot of capes that are going to be in that film as it is.  Maybe they could let just her show up in the Luke Cage series?  I mean, Squirrel Girl is the nanny for Luke and Jessica Jones’ kid.

In the Mail: The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Vol. 2.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Vol. 2: Squirrel You Know It’s True came in the mail today.  Being a natural patriarchal sort, I of course exercised my privilege as head of the household to immediately put the package on the table so that my wife would get first crack at it when she got home.  I didn’t even open it first.

She has finally – after much cackling – deigned to let me have a stab at it, so here goes…

*Also* In The Mail: The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Vol. 1.

I got The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Vol. 1: Squirrel Power in the same Amazon shipment.  Because I am a good husband, I carefully did not open it so that my wife could have the pleasure of reading it first. Then, once I was absolutely sure that she was done with it, I read it in one sitting, because: Squirrel Girl.

There’s a movie in this characte, I’m telling you. And it’ll make money, too! Marvel seems to be good at making money out of its superhero properties.

SQUIRREL GIRL!

Being drawn by Guilded Age alumnus Ericka Henderson.  I gotta admit, I kind of want a Squirrel Girl movie.  By that I mean that I want one, but I didn’t want to push it previously.  I mean, she’s a fun comic character and everything, but is Marvel really going to be able to make money off of that?

GotG

I guess that it all depends on how GOOD Marvel thinks that it is, then.  Maybe they can’t make a successful Squirrel Girl movie.  Maybe it’s more of a Shelbyville DC idea…
