Book of the Week: Orphans of the Sky.

Robert Heinlein’s Orphans of the Sky is one of those annoyingly seminal works that Heinlein oh-so-casually tossed off on a regular basis: it’s more or less impossible to write stories about generation ships without at least referencing this work.  If you’re unfamiliar with it, you’re in luck: X Minus One did a radio play based on ‘Universe’ (the story that takes up the first half of the book). It’s not exact, but it’ll give you the gist. Also, you should be listening to more radio shows anyway.  We all should, really.

@instapundit wins campaign to honor Robert Anson Heinlein.

Not that Glenn’s role in all of this will ever really be publicly noted.

A physician credited as the father of osteopathic medicine and a noted science fiction writer have been selection for induction into the state Capitol’s Hall of Famous Missourians. Joining them as the newest inductees are a suffragist and the catalyst of a citizens initiative that limited state revenues and local taxes.

The hall is a collection of bronze busts that generally has honored people chosen by the House speaker. However, half the new honorees this time were selected through a public nomination and voting process. The four inductees were identified to The Associated Press by House Speaker Tim Jones before the public announcement.

Winning the vote was physician Andrew Taylor Still and science fiction author Robert Heinlein.

To be fair, it’s often hard to assess how well an online campaign actually does. Still: well done, Glenn.

Via, obviously, Instapundit.

Book of the Week: ‘Heidegger and a Hippo Walk Through Those Pearly Gates’

Yeah, I know: but Heidegger and a Hippo Walk Through Those Pearly Gates: Using Philosophy (and Jokes!) to Explore Life, Death, the Afterlife, and Everything in Between was something that I had grabbed for my wife to pass the time while waiting for midwife appointments, mostly because of the cover art.  I’m reading it now, on the thumbs-up that my wife gave it: it is in fact pretty funny so far.

And so, it being Sunday, we replace Take Back Your Government  with it.
