…today’s the day: Amazon is offering refurbished Kindle Fires for 25% off. That’s the big 8.9 one (Wi-Fi only), by the way. Comes with warranty, which is why I’m pointing it out – and putting it on the Wish List, although I don’t expect any movement on that.

One could buy a cheapo $100 Android tablet and download the Kindle and Nook apps, and have nearly the same thing, without the walled garden app stores.
I’ve been pretty happy with my Kindle Fire. The little dude went with me to Afghanistan and worked quite well.
