The @HPLHS “FUNDRAISER TO PRESERVE LOVECRAFT’S LETTERS TO LONG.”

Short version: there’s a bunch of correspondence between HP Lovecraft and Frank Belknap Long that’s for sale by a private collector. The HPL Historical Society, among others, naturally takes the position that this belongs in a museum; and so they’re trying to put up twenty grand to help buy the correspondence and donate it to Brown University’s existing Lovecraft collection of letters. Here’s the link to help contribute to that.

  1. These days, I’m not sure museums are necessarily any better than private collectors when it comes to keeping these things intact for future generations. It sorta puts the letters at the mercy of those who kill institutions from within and then wear the institutions’s skins.

  2. Here I thought they would be getting together funds to hire an action historian to archive the letters. If I knew any, I would suggest their services.

That said, I think the proper people to acquire this sort of artifact is a library with a good special collection, not a museum. Libraries tend to treat old books as holy artifacts. Museums reserve that honor for actual holy artifacts (albeit, they aren’t very concerned with who declared the artifact holy).

  3. It’s a CULTURAL REFERENCE, fer crying out loud. 🙂 Yes, they’re going to donate these letters to Brown U’s HPL special collection.
