First hints that Dunkirk is gonna be huge.

Well, huge for a movie about the Miracle of Dunkirk.  Rotten Tomatoes notes that the embargo on full reviews isn’t until July 14th (the movie comes out on the 21st), but the first reactions are coming in on Twitter, and apparently people are blown away.  And, oh yeah: see it in IMAX 70mm.  There’s also this reaction that intrigues me:

Milana Vayntrub cast as Squirrel Girl for New Warriors.

I… don’t have an opinion, actually. I don’t have any knowledge of Milana Vayntrub as an actress, so she might be good. She might be bad.  She doesn’t look much like Doreen from the comics, though:

New ‘Dark Tower’ trailer!

I have heard that The Dark Tower is, in fact, a sequel to the book series.  Which actually makes sense, in context. One of Stephen King’s brighter ideas, in fact; the plot doesn’t have to be the same, just as long as the characters and concepts remain essentially unspoiled. Check it out:

The casting does look good, too.

The ‘Godzilla’ Anime trailer.

Thank goodness for Netflix: they’re just going to show it on there after the Godzilla anime finishes its run in Japan.  I think that this works out for everybody: I’ll be able to watch it without too much of a hassle and they won’t have to try to get an American distribution deal going. Well, OK, obviously Netflix is making a distribution deal here, but you know what I mean. No need to try to get butts in cinema seats.

PS: Yup, I’m assuming that it’s going to be decent.  They take this intellectual property seriously in Japan, and they also take anime seriously. It has no legitimate excuse not to be at least decent, honestly.

Movie of the Week: Kong: Skull Island.

I’m sorry, but I liked Kong: Skull Island. I was very straightforward in my desires: I wanted to see a giant ape on the big screen, and they gave me a giant ape. This movie comes out next week on DVD, and I’m debating getting it.  I’ll want to be up to date before the next Monsterverse flick comes out, after all.

And so, adieu to Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated.

Hey! A radio play adaption of “Far Below.”

This is pretty cool.  “Far Below” was written by Frank Barbour Johnson in 1939*, and it is remarkable how close it matches up to a modern Cthulhu Mythos story.  It’s not officially part of the Mythos, although Johnson name-drops Lovecraft in the story and it’s blatantly obvious that the tale draws from “Pickman’s Model.”  This radio play is a decent adaptation, although they had to add a character because the original is essentially a monologue.

The first four minutes of Spider-Man Homecoming.

It’s cool: they put it up on Playstation Network and I’m pretty sure that the folks at Sony really want to make sure that everybody understands that Spider-Man Homecoming is coming out on Friday and it’s so absolutely part of the MCU and not like the way Deadpool kind of hinted that it was, either.  If you were on the fence on this movie – I wasn’t – this footage might help convince you to go see it.  Tom Holland simply is Peter Parker. I can’t wait for Friday.
