Wonder Woman II: Wonder Woman vs. the Commies?

Could be, could be: “…The Wrap has said in an unsourced report that Wonder Woman 2 will take place during the 1980s and feature Diana of Themyscira going head-to-head with agents of the Soviet Union.” Fine by me.  I was going to go see the sequel anyway*: I won’t object to a gritty spy-vs-spy drama in which a lot of Commies suddenly and terminally discover the practical problems with espousing dialectal materialism in a world that has, you know, visible gods and stuff.  I won’t object at all. I’ll even buy extra popcorn. Continue reading Wonder Woman II: Wonder Woman vs. the Commies?

So, hey, this TMNT short from Nickelodeon Did Not Suck.

It’s actually pretty good.  Although April is a teenager herself in this version.  Guess Nickelodeon decided to go all teen-action. Which is fine: at least the production is enjoying itself, the way that a TMNT show should.  And, honestly?  Animation is simply the way this hast to go. Live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies and shows don’t so much visit the Uncanny Valley as they buy land there.

‘Zygote.’ (NSFW)

I’ve seen this going around over the last few days.  Zygote is pretty good, but it’s definitely a horror flick. Be careful if you have kids around. Or if you’re, ah, a bit squeamish.

Whoa. The new live-action Tick… might not… suck?

Huh.  I’ve been, you know, assuming that it’s gonna suck, because let’s face it; it’s hard for our culture to do the Tick properly.  And yet; and, yet.  This is not a bad trailer. It promises a certain level of respect for the intellectual property.

The Tick will be released to Amazon Prime members on August 25th.

So, expect a Spider-Man trilogy.

$117 million in the first weekend, which is at the higher end of what the studio was really expecting (Sony said $100 million, but that was a fairly obvious low-ball ploy).  Considering how rave the reviews were, Spider-Man: Homecoming probably has legs. I have no idea whether it’s going to pass Wonder Woman or not, but it’s definitely possible that it will.  Not that it’s a race; there’s plenty of room at the table, to thoroughly mix the metaphors.

It’s funny: I’ve heard people complain about how sparse the movie landscape was, this year.  Despite those two movies, and Dunkirk in a bit, and everybody said Logan was awesome and I believe them (I still won’t watch it unless I’m in a sad mood anyway)… anyway, I’ve been happy with the movies available this summer. I’m not sure what the fuss is.

Well, those are certainly… *visible* Star Wars outfits.

Probably Lando’s. Almost certainly Lando’s.  But not Londo’s, which is a shame because I’d pay good money to see a Star Wars movie suddenly get invaded by Babylon 5 characters.  And I suspect, so would the rest of you.

…This really doesn’t match the color scheme of the original trilogy, huh?

DC doing Gotham By Gaslight Batman animated flick.

It’s supposedly leaked, but I have to wonder whether I should be writing ‘leaked.’ After all, what is the downside of people learning a month and a half early that the upcoming Batman and Harley Quinn DVD is going to have a sneak peek at a hitherto-unannounced Gotham By Gaslight project?  The original title is popular,* and strategically revealing the feature on the DVD may spark both sales and interest.

I mean, I may now pick up B&HQ.  Because Gotham By Gaslight would be pretty cool, if they do it right. And if it works, they could do The Doom That Came To Gotham, which would also be pretty cool (and is exactly what you’d expect it to be, from the title).

*For those who don’t know, it’s a Mignola/Augustyn Batman story that reimagines him in Victorian England, hunting Jack the Ripper.  The favorable reception of this caused DC to come up with their alternate DC history Elseworld series. So, pretty seminal, there.

First hints that Dunkirk is gonna be huge.

Well, huge for a movie about the Miracle of Dunkirk.  Rotten Tomatoes notes that the embargo on full reviews isn’t until July 14th (the movie comes out on the 21st), but the first reactions are coming in on Twitter, and apparently people are blown away.  And, oh yeah: see it in IMAX 70mm.  There’s also this reaction that intrigues me:
