I don’t think Honest Trailers was being entirely fair to GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE, though. The movies are not there to be, well, GODZILLA MINUS ONE. They’re there to be big, sloppy fun, and they’re hitting their marks. There is virtue in picking an achievable goal, and striving your best to reach it. Not every film has to try to be the Greatest Movie Ever.

Short version: this is no way a criticism, but the movie is very loud, very colorful, and cuts to a monster fight whenever you start wondering about the implications of the plot.

I do not actually want to see more than a little Godzilla vs. Kong fighting, you understand. I want to see Godzilla, Kong, and the US military teaming up and kicking everybody’s butts. Well, I’m probably gonna get at least two of them in this particular mix, and that’ll just have to do.

I do like me some monster movies, especially since they’ve stopped trying to get me to root for Kong in opposition to Godzilla. He’s an all right dude, really, but the Gorilla-Whale’s been indispensable in numerous US military operations. I value my country’s allies.
