You should look at these two comics by Meg Syv. Like, right now.
Found here and here (horror-flavored, but not grimdark). Meg Syv has found a definite vein of something while laboring in the creative minds; I’m quite keen to find out what it is. She’s also got a Patreon that you should think about supporting – right after you support mine, of course. Or, heck, even before. It’s Christmas season, after all.
My Patreon microfiction ‘Jurisdiction.’
I may, someday, turn “Jurisdiction” into a larger story. Or maybe even a book. There’s a book in this concept, I’m sure of it.
I just put up an informal survey question for my Patreon patrons.
Mostly involving what universes they want their future stories based in. I encourage everybody here who is a patron to go over and give feedback; and I encourage everybody who isn’t a patron to feel free to sign up. Or, hey, tell their friends to sign up. Yup, I crashed-and-napped this afternoon. It happens. anyway, ‘Psychopath‘ is subtly horrifying, I think. I mean, really, there’s no good interpretation there, is there?
My Patreon short story: ‘Processing Duty.’
I think of “Processing Duty” as my little endorsement of the idea that you can get used to anything, really. Which is kind of funny, considering that my favorite horror fiction is Lovecraftian, which more or less explicitly denies that you can. I guess I just have a complicated worldview… or possibly one that I don’t examine too closely for internal consistency.

I tried to imagine in ‘Birthday‘ how this sort of thing might actually go. After all, everybody knows the value of a first impression, right? And politeness costs a man nothing. And any other number of cliches, really.

“Mindful of Him” is one where I tried to pack a bit more into it. I think that it works, but these are my babies, so I think that they all work. More or less.
