In the E-Mail: @HPLHS’s DART – HERBERT WEST: REANIMATOR.

The HPL Historical Society had it on sale, so I finally picked up the DARK ADVENTURE RADIO THEATRE – HERBERT WEST: REANIMATOR CD. As usual, the MP3 got sent to me first. I have high hopes for this one: the very things that kind of make it, ah, not HPL’s best written story shouldn’t at all get in the way of the radio play. There’s a reason why directors keep making film versions of this story; it adapts well*.

Moe Lane

*Theoretically. Some of the film versions of this story are… uneven.

@HPLHS offering *20% off* on Dark Adventure Radio Theater episodes!

This is an eldritch good deal, folks. I grabbed HERBERT WEST – REANIMATOR right away, when I saw this. ‘Course, I’m kind of out of other DARTs to buy at this point, but isn’t that sort of an endorsement right there?

In the e-Mail: @HPLHS’s THE DREAMS IN THE WITCH HOUSE DART.

I’m running out of DARTs to buy! Which is kind of alarming. On the other hand, I’m holding out for HERBERT WEST – REANIMATOR. The story itself is a little clunky sometimes, but I have high hopes for the radio play adaptation, as those clunky bits will likely dissolve utterly when actually dramatized with sound and everything. Again, here’s hoping.

Listened to @HPLHS’s A SOLSTICE CAROL last night.

Because if you’re wrapping presents at midnight, why not do it while listening to a HPL Historical Society DART? Anyway, A SOLSTICE CAROL is excellent; I don’t know if it’s my absolute favorite Lovecraft radio play, but it’s definitely in the top three. The DART is a genuinely clever combination of Lovecraft and Dickens that manages to capture the mood of, say, ‘Pickman’s Model’ while at the same time remaining true to the mood of ‘A Christmas Carol.’ I found the climatic moment endearing and oddly sweet, despite the fact that it… ah, spoilers.

Worth checking out, in other words.

Oh, wait, @HPLHS’s A SOLSTICE CAROL isn’t their Christmas album.

Silly me. A SOLSTICE CAROL is actually a set of three HPL short stories linked together by a Dickensian framing device. Given that one of the stories is ‘Pickman’s Model,’ a story with some resonance to me, of course I must pick it up.

And possibly the HPL Historical Society could have made that a little clearer? I say this without heat. No harm done in the end, after all.

PS: Looks like you can get the DARTs as audiobooks on Amazon. That probably makes it easier to download them?

In the Mail: @HPLHS’s THE COLOUR OUT OF SPACE Dark Adventure Radio Theater.

I actually got it Saturday, but I forgot to get the mail Saturday. So now I’m listening to THE COLOUR OUT OF SPACE now, headphones and all. As always, the DART’s a treat; the HPL Historical Society does good work with these.

But I still want more movies*.

Moe Lane

*Yeah, I know, Nick Cage’s making one on this very subject. But I want more HPLHS movies, too. I’m greedy that way.

20% off sale at @HPLHS.

A good deal. I finally went ahead and picked up The Colour Out Of Space Dark Adventure Radio Theater, which I’ve been meaning to get forever but I had all the other DARTs to get first. But I seemed to have run out of other DARTs to get first, which is worrisome. I kind of liked having the backlog there to chew through.

Anyway, 20% off is nice and there’s stuff in there worth getting.

In the E-Mail: the @HPLHS THE SHADOW OUT OF TIME DART.

Link for THE SHADOW OUT OF TIME Dark Adventure Radio Theater program here. Got the download just in time, too: I gotta take the kids to the dentist this afternoon. I can listen to this while they get on with the teeth cleaning and whatnot.

The only problem? I’m starting to run out of DARTs to get, alas. Dunno what I’m going to do when they’re all bought.
