Jim Moran (D, Virginia-08) to crawl back under the pestilent rock from which he spawned.

No word yet whether they’re going to clean, fumigate, or sterilize his office. Assuming that they just don’t evacuate it and clean out the fetid hole with a thermite grenade, of course. I’m not sure if they should go that far, though: it might destroy any evidence that might be buried at the bottom of the muck.

As you might have guessed, I am not fond of Jim Moran.  My morning is thus made:

Senior appropriator and progressive stalwart James P. Moran will step down at the end of this year, making him the third House Democrat in just three days to announce his retirement.

The 12-term Virginia lawmaker will announce his decision in a Wednesday morning statement obtained early by CQ Roll Call.

Virginia Senate race will be the canary in the coal mine.

AT THE MOMENT, Democrat Mark Warner is favored to win. But it looks like former RNC chair Ed Gillespie is running. I’d recommend that you ignore most of the NYT’s slightly nervous well-poisoning there* and note this section:

Virginians who have recently spoken to Mr. Warner said he was consumed with the idea of a challenge from Mr. Gillespie. One longtime political hand in Richmond said Mr. Warner shifted a recent conversation to the topic of Mr. Gillespie “within about the first 15 seconds.”

Better Ed Gillespie than Bill Bolling for VA-SEN.

And I say this with no knowledge whether Bill Bolling is even thinking of a Senate run. I am also not saying that Ed Gillespie is the best choice for VA-SEN, because I’m pretty confident that many of my readers who are to the right on me on immigration will say that Gillespie is not. What I am saying is that my first reaction to this:

Former Republican National Committee chairman Ed Gillespie is considering a run against Virginia Sen. Mark Warner (D) next year.

“It’s a very winnable race,” the powerful GOP insider told POLITICO in a Saturday afternoon interview.

…was the title of my post; and that my second reaction was that Ed Gillespie should stay far away from Bolling if he wants to be a viable candidate in the Virginia GOP Senate primary next year. Bolling burned a lot of bridges by helping to inflict Terry McAuliffe on Virginia voters for the next four years; I’m not the only one who is not going to forget that, and I’m a damnable Republican squish. Imagine how the hardcore conservatives feel…

Who here is shocked?

A major Democratic Party benefactor and Obama campaign bundler helped pay for professional petition circulators responsible for getting Virginia Libertarian gubernatorial candidate Robert C. Sarvis on the ballot — a move that could split conservative votes in a tight race.

Campaign finance records show the Libertarian Booster PAC has made the largest independent contribution to Sarvis’ campaign, helping to pay for professional petition circulators who collected signatures necessary to get Sarvis’ name on Tuesday’s statewide ballot.

Austin, Texas, software billionaire Joe Liemandt is the Libertarian Booster PAC’s major benefactor. He’s also a top bundler for President Barack Obama.

This is, of course, a parody of Barack Obama’s actual remarks about Terry McAuliffe. You can tell because surely Barack Obama would not be stupid enough to praise Obamacare – and McAuliffe’s intention to actually drag the state further into its clutches – two days before the Virginia gubernatorial election. There are limits to idiocy.

There have to be.

Charles C.W. Cooke eviscerates phony libertarian Virginia governor candidate Robert Sarvis.

Come, I will conceal nothing from you: while I am friendly to a lot of libertarian ideas, I am not hard-shelled about it. I am no Lsyander Spooner or Benjamin Tucker.  But I do know enough about the subject to know that, say, I was name-dropping some of the old-time thinkers there that the modern anarcho-capitalists like. In other words: I at least know what a modern Libertarian looks like.

More details on Terry McAuliffe’s profit off of a dying man’s signature.

I don’t get this.

A dying mechanic wanted a few thousand dollars to leave to his wife, two sons and infant daughter. A politically connected millionaire, now running for Virginia governor, wanted to make some money. And a Rhode Island estate planner wanted to become ambassador to the Vatican.

All three came together on paper in late 2006 in a deal struck just two months before the 44-year-old mechanic died of cancer.

The mechanic got $5,000. The millionaire, Democrat Terry McAuliffe, made at least $47,000. But the estate planning lawyer, Joseph Caramadre, went to prison instead of Rome.

Did Terry McAuliffe allow GreenTech to keep on fundraising, using his name?

Man, the Washington Post is really setting itself up for some severe criticism when they finally end up endorsing Terry McAuliffe. It’s like they’re providing us with all the information we need to discredit said endorsement ahead of time:

…Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe (D), is listed in a recent confidential memorandum to prospective investors as GreenTech Automotive’s “chairman emeritus.” The 70-page document includes photographs and references to McAuliffe’s close ties to former president Bill Clinton. It recounts his political pedigree in detail, from serving as finance director for Jimmy Carter’s 1980 presidential reelection campaign to breaking fundraising records for the Democratic Party and chairing Hillary Rodham Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign.
